Mudfest
Mother Nature was not kind to The 10th Annual Dream. But Baltes and Company pulled it off with a Herculean effort.
The big event was slated to start on Friday night with qualifying, but storm number one washed out everything. The next morning, track retrieval began, but storm number two erupted at about 10 a.m. The quick inch of rain made big-time slop of the track again. But there was never any thought of calling it quits.
So, with several thousand fans waiting, the effort started again. This time it took eight hours, using a tractor-pulled sheep's foot, a grader, and a dozen pick-ups. To finish off the track, Baltes called for all 144 cars to slowly tool around the famous half-mile oval. It was one of the most unbelievable sights ever at the track.
Even though there was a tall cushion to deal with, the track still produced excellent racing and saw Rick Eckert set a new track record of 15.215 seconds.
