"NASCAR is the ratings success of the year in sports," says NBC Sports spokesman Mike McCarley.
At press time NBC's ratings were up an average of 66 percent from the ratings on various networks during a comparable period in 2000. Included in that were some of the strongest ratings ever for races in direct competition with the NFL. Over the first half of the Cup season, FOX's ratings were about 30 percent better than last year, when events were scattered around the TV dial.
Ratings, and some very good racing on the track, have been the only bright spots for the sport in 2001.
