If winged 305cid sprint car driver Bryan Scott had been wheeling a 410 or 360 machine this past season, his name would have been all over the racing papers and Internet sites.
All this Castalia, Ohio, driver did was garner 19 wins, along with taking a major 305 event-the Bauman Auto Group Invitational at Fremont (Ohio) Speedway. For his efforts, Scott brought home the $3,000 prize money.
It all began for Scott in 1993, following a five-year Air Force stint, in the same-type 305 sprint car he drives today. The first three years he used the same car to race on both pavement and dirt. That first season, he received Rookie of the Year honors at Attica Raceway Park (an Ohio dirt track) and in the PRESS pavement series. Fifth-place points finishes followed in 1994 at both Attica and Fremont speedways.
A new J&J chassis came on board in 1995, the same car Scott still races today. Highlights that season included three wins on the pavement, which enabled a third-place points finish in the Sandusky pavement series. He finished second in Fremont Speedway dirt points.
In 1997, for a single race, Scott dropped a 410 engine into his sprinter and finished seventh in a 410 non-winged sprint race at Anderson (Indiana) Speedway.
The 1999 season saw Scott finish fourth in the tough 305SAS pavement series in an all-pavement season. That changed with the start of the millennium with four feature dirt wins in 2000, which also included winning the Attica 305 track championship.
Then came the out-of-sight 2001 effort with those 19 wins coming in only 34 starts. He won track championships at both Attica and Fremont, winning nine races at each oval. The season finished in a flurry, as Scott won seven of his last eight races.
Scott likes running the low-budget team. "I pride myself on being easy on the equipment and staying out of trouble. In the 35 wins in my career, I have destroyed only two wings, and I will be starting the ninth year on my frame. It has never been even clipped."
For this season, it will be more of the same, with Scott again concentrating on the dirt. But down the road, Scott has eyes for running the top-level 410 sprinters, skipping the 360 versions. He feels he's ready to run those 800hp haulers, and with what he's done so far in 305 sprinters, it's hard to argue the point.
