Minnesota Muscle
Brittany Fischer started racing go-karts at age 13, but when she reached 16, she wanted a car. Before long the resident of Villard, Minnesota, was racing a B-Modified. Now at 18, she races a Late Model at I-94 Speedway in Sauk Center, Minnesota, and at I-94 Raceway in Ferges Falls, Minnesota. Brittany picked up the car from track owner Dick Johaneck. Her father and Jim Yackel rebuilt the whole car. So, what turns Brittany on about racing? "Being a girl and racing when everybody says you can't," she says. Brittany hopes to one day make it to the ranks of ASA or ARCA competition. Her 15-year-old sister, Brandi, has taken to the track this season, too, driving a Legend.
Patience Pays
Tim Dower of Gillette, Wyoming, has a sticker inside his 1979 Olds Cutlass Street Stock to constantly remind him to "Be Patient." That paid off in 2001 when Tim was named Driver of the Year at Gillette Thunder Speedway, where he also won the Street Stock track championship. Tim also was state champion in 2001, and was the Wyoming, Montana, Dakota Association regional champion. His race car is powered by a Dave Adams engine. Tim credits his accomplishments to power, preparation and patience.
Billy Jack's On Track
The 2001 season was the second year that Billy Jack Skidmore of Detroit, Texas, has been dirt track racing. He competes mostly at Paris Motor Speedway in Texas. Jack got his first taste of racing watching his nephew and brother-in-law race. But when a track opened in Blossom, Texas, Jack bought a car from his brother-in-law, stripped it, and put a rollcage on it. After lots of work, he took his car to the track and started his racing career. Jack finished seventh in points in 2000, his rookie year. He was track champion in 2001 in the open competition class at Paris Motor Speedway.
