* Dick Beaty was the Winston Cup technical inspector for several years. On race mornings, Beaty would walk up to crew chiefs or crewmembers and put his arm on their shoulder. In a very gentle voice he would ask: "You want to tell me, or do you want me to tell you?"
Beaty would never say how many times it worked. But one veteran crew chief immediately spilled his guts at North Wilkesboro. "I told them boys not to bring those soaked tires. I told them we were going to get caught."
