What was the last pit crew to win back-to-back titles? None other than Dale Earnhardt's crew, which accomplished the feat in 1987 and 1988.
No More ChocolateDanny "Chocolate" Myers, perhaps the best-known crewman in the Winston Cup garage, has fueled his last race car. After 17 years working as a gasman for Richard Childress Racing, primarily for Dale Earnhardt's car, Myers has passed the fuel can on to someone else.
"I'm still physically able to gas the car and would love to do so, but it's time to let some new guys have the chance," Myers said. "It takes a while for teams to gel and be successful, and I want to give them the opportunity to begin that process now."
Myers, 54, began his career as a gasman in 1986 for the No. 3 GM Goodwrench team and Earnhardt, and he was part of the team during Earnhardt's six NASCAR Winston Cup championships at RCR. Myers remained with the No. 29 GM Goodwrench Service team when Kevin Harvick took over driving duties, and he moved to the No. 31 Cingular Wireless team in June 2002.
While you won't see Myers fueling race cars, he'll have plenty to keep him busy. He will remain at RCR as the director of safety, responsible for ensuring that RCR is in compliance with state and federal safety regulations. He'll also assist with the RCR Museum and Gift Shop and various special projects.
