Depending on how you look at it, Texas was one of the highlights of our season. In short, we were leading the Busch Series race at Texas, but on a restart late in the race I was lined up behind a lapped car. When the green flag waved, the car in front of me did not come up to speed, so I dove to the left (inside) to avoid causing damage to my car and to avoid causing a major accident. I pulled to the left-rear quarter panel of the lapped car, but never passed him. Several laps later, I was issued the black flag for passing to the left. Although I didn't make the pass, NASCAR contended I "had the intent to make a pass."
After obeying the black flag, I was later caught up in a major pile-up that ended our day.
We dominated that race only to have it taken away from us in the end. Nothing's changed since then, but I still disagree with NASCAR's decision. We put the entire situation behind us and focused on winning races and being as competitive as possible week after week.
One positive did come out of the race in Texas: We led almost 90 laps and showed a lot of people that this team is capable. Had the ball bounced the other way for us once or twice during the first half of the season, we could easily have had a couple of wins. The encouraging part is that we've come from 42nd in points, following the season-opener at Daytona, to where we are right now.
