TV announcers should talk about what is happening on the monitors, but they don't always do that. Racing announcers are up high where they can see the track as well as the monitors. What I would like to see is the announcers placed in a room with three or four monitors where they can't see the track at all. I believe they would do a much better job of what you want to see at home.
I guess we old-timers have a keen eye for things that could hurt the sport. Television, if not done properly and without supervision, could turn into a wrecking tool. By the same token, should TV decide the racing program is not working and should just go away, then that would slow the sport down tremendously. I don't think this will happen. Right now we're the new kid on the block with television in most of the country. What I'm saying is let's do it right and keep it exciting. Like I said, we old-timers keep a pretty close eye on the sport, and we monitor other things that could damage it.
The big sponsors suddenly pulling out of the sport would hurt a great deal. They have done so much to push our sport forward, but if they suddenly pulled out like the car manufacturers did back in the '60s and '70s, that would take a toll. I've read a good bit about the Great Depression. Seems that a lot of people went to baseball games in those days just to get their mind off all their problems, if only for just a few hours.
I certainly hope we never have another depression, but through the hard economical times we've had during our era, racing seems to continue at a good pace. We want that to continue right on, no matter what the situation. We just want to keep a watchful eye on our steps as we move forward.
