I got to know most all the print media guys while I was racing and became friends with several of them. Throughout my career, I tried to understand that they have a tough job to do.
We had a lot of good times, just sitting and talking about where we came from and what we did when we were young. A lot of the writers started out as country boys, just like me. They went off to college and got their education and came back as newspaper guys who wanted to cover racing. I think most every one of them who stayed around very long liked racing. If they didn't like racing, then they went off and covered football, basketball, or something else.
I just like people for who they are. I have never understood why people sometimes try to make others out for somebody they are not. I guess that is why I don't see eye-to-eye with television announcers sometimes.
Hey, guys, let's tell the truth once in a few races. I don't think you are fooling a lot of the fans. At least I hope you aren't. And please realize I made a vow not to laugh at another man's endeavors. I laugh at myself enough.
