Action is unimpeded in this photo from the 1956 race on the Daytona Beach and Road Course, the 4.1-mile forerunner of Daytona International Speedway. But things got a little wet later in the day. Officials had to end the race two laps shy of the scheduled 39 laps when high tide threatened action. Tim Flock, driving one of six Carl Kiekhaefer Chryslers in the event, was 57 seconds ahead when the race was called. As team owner, Kiekhaefer, who made his fortune with the Mercury Outboard Motor Co., won 22 races in '55 and 30 in '56. Four of the Kiekhaefer cars can be seen here.
