From 1993 to 1995, I was with Bobby Labonte Racing, and in 1996, I was with the Caterpillar race team-with a shot at the Busch championship during each one of those years. Then I went through some lean years with my career. Those are times I look back on now and see how I developed. Although I was not being productive on the racetrack and in the win column, those years were productive for me as a person. I became a smarter driver, even though I wasn't competing for race wins. That time period involved finding out a lot of things not to do on and off the track.
I particularly feel comfortable and in my element as the Busch Series points leader, a position I've been fortunate to hold for several weeks this season. Last year, I got tested more than ever before-from my peers and from people in the garage area. People had written me off or didn't think I could do the job in the first place.
This year has been a pleasant turnaround for me and for my confidence as a driver. I just hoped and prayed that one day I would have the opportunity, just one more time, to showcase what I've learned, and 2003 has provided that for me. It's been a real blessing.
