THE REAL DEALJoseph Altig, 15, is a lefthanded pitcher for his high school varsity baseball team and a quarterback for the varsity football team in Imperial Beach, California. But he's also a talented racecar driver who started racing Dwarf Car at a local dirt track two years ago. He finished Sixth in points that first year and moved to a Street Stock division the next season where he finished Eighth in points to his dad Keith's Sixth. In their first race this season, Keith won and Joe Jinished Fith in a "sick car," according to Keith. The next race saw Joseph notch his first win, after starting from the pole, with Keith trying to run him down at the finish before finishing second.
SCARY FASTDon Emrich of Evansville, Wisconsin, converted his 1974 Monte Carlo short track car into a truck. Don says the body is 22 gauge steel, the engine is a 355 SBC with a 11:1 compression ratio, with fuelie heads, and the truck weighs 2,500 pounds. "I only like to use it for weekly test & tune sessions at local quarter-mile paved ovals," says Don. He adds that it's "scary fast". Don, by the way, says he is an avid SCR reader who bought the magazine's inaugural issue back in '66.
WINNING YOUNGEvery Friday night at Concord Motorsport Park in North Carolina, you can find racing action involing Legends and Bandolero cars. The Bandoleros attract young drivers with aspirations of making it to the larger racing divisions. One of the largest divisions at Concord is the Bandolero Bandits, where 11-year-old Grayson Massey from Dryfork, Virginia, chose to start his racing endeavors. In only his fifth start Grayson pulled an upset and won from the pole in this highly competitive division. "We would have won sooner, but he is not the only one learning here," says his father. "I had to learn the setup that goes into these vehicles. The first few races he had to drive practically on basketballs." Grayson can be seen this summer racing on Tuesday nights at the Summer Shootout at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
