Smearing some grease on the cupped shim will make installation easier.
Speaking of torque ratings, you shouldn't need to remove the carrier from the housing as I did, but if you do, retorque the bolts to 60 ft-lb.
With this done, the cover should be installed with a new gasket. Over- tightening the cover bolts is one way to make the rear cover leak. These bolts need only 50 in-lb of torque. That is equal to about 4.2 ft-lb.

Use a drop of red Loctite(TM) when reinstalling the 5/16-inch head bolt. Ihad to tighten it the same way I loosened it, with a hammer and chisel.
If you use silicone sealer-type material on the cover lip, don't use too much. It squeezes out on the inside the same as it does on the outside.
Fill the rearend with rear-gear oil. There are many types available. With new seals and a gasket, I prefer a synthetic oil such as Royal Purple's Max Gear 75-90. It is thinner than conventional oils, but strong, thus reducing friction. Because it is not replaced often, a few bucks for the good stuff shouldn't be a problem.
You should be locked up the right way now, pulling from both sides.
