Six-point sockets (left) put the most surface area on the head of a fastener, so they can apply more torque without fear of rounding off the edges or otherwise damaging it. Many ultra-strong fasteners used in race engines use a 12-point head that requires a set of 12-point sockets like you see on the right. View Related Article
