Donald Hoag: The King Of Lang

Dutch Hoag has a legitimate claim to that title

The trophy queens changed, but the winner stayed the same. Hoag successfully defended the ROC title at Langhorne in 1968.

You’ll notice an aerodynamic modification to the Turner Brothers’ coupe. A wing was added to the top of the car. The next year, the wings were outlawed.

Future son-in-law Lee Osborne took the No. 18 ride when Hoag switched to his own car. Osborne started on the pole in 1968, alongside the Lenny Boehler-owned No. 3. Hoag started back in the third row with fellow New Yorker Maynard Troyer.

Langhorne was the place to race and the season-ending event drew cars and competitors from all over. It was an added attraction to the on-track action.

During a pit stop in 1969, a young crew member named Geoff Bodine worked with the team. Hoag still razzes Bodine about a snafu that resulted in the team returning for an additional stop.

Dutch has helped his son, Dean, with his Limited Supermodified at Oswego. Now, the attention is turned to teenager Alex, son of Dean and grandson of Dutch. The youngster has some strong lineage in his favor.
