The race involved competitors from the Pacific Coast Late Model division (the predecessor to the NASCAR Winston West Series) and from the NASCAR Grand National Division (the predecessor of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series).

Ray Elder’s team became the first West Coast team in the modern era to win a NASCAR Winston Cup race, picking up the victory on January 10, 1971, at Riverside International Raceway.
