vOn February 9, 1987, Bill Elliott established a Daytona International Speedway qualifying record with a lap of 210.364 mph (42.783 seconds). The mark still stands. Elliott's Speedweeks success that season (he also won the Busch Clash and the Daytona 500) foreshadowed his record run at Talladega later in the year, which, at 212.809 mph, produced the fastest qualifying lap in Winston Cup history.
