By the 1988 season, Alan Kulwicki's Zerex Ford Thunderbird was a threatto win every race. He scored six Top-5 finishes in the 27 events leadinginto the inaugural Checker 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Alan Kulwicki salutes the crowd after winning his first-ever NASCARWinston Cup event - the 1988 Checker 500 at Phoenix. The Wisconsindriver went on to win the 1992 Winston Cup championship before havinghis career tragically cut short when he perished in a plane crash enroute to Bristol, Tennessee, on April 1, 1993.
