By the 1988 season, Alan Kulwicki's Zerex Ford Thunderbird was a threatto win every race. He scored six Top-5 finishes in the 27 events leadinginto the inaugural Checker 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.

The Wisconsindriver went on to win the 1992 Winston Cup championship before havinghis career tragically cut short when he perished in a plane crash enroute to Bristol, Tennessee, on April 1, 1993.
