Straight from the heartland comes this month's Young Racer's Club winner, Tyler Cale. Hailing from Donnellson, Iowa, 20-year-old Tyler began racing just two years ago although he has been around racing all his life. His father, Kevin Cale, has raced Late Models for more than 20 years. But a few years ago, Dad traded in that Late Model for a Modified and got a matching one for Tyler.
The pair races together at Lee County Speedway right in their hometown of Donnellson, which is in the southeast corner of Iowa near the Illinois and Missouri borders. So you can imagine that there is quite a bit of racing for bragging rights.
"There have been a few nights we finished 1-2, and there have also been nights when we went away not talking to one another," says Tyler who finished Third in points in his rookie season. "We have a blast and it's all worth it in the end."
This year, Tyler's dad got the bragging rights capping a successful season with the track championship in the IMCA modified Division. Tyler, meanwhile, notched two feature wins as well as "9 or 10 heat race wins" en route to a Seventh place points finish. The two work very closely together and even have their cars side by side in the shed in the backyard.
Tyler has three feature wins in his short career and credits his Mechanical Engineering degree from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids as being a big help in his success on the track. As far as future plans go, Tyler would love to some day get into an IMCA Late Model, gain some national points and get to Boone for the Super Nationals where he hopes to win the title.
